KAMPALA: Hackers have stolen $17 million from Uganda’s central bank after breaching its IT systems.

According to foreign news agencies, the hackers accessed the Bank of Uganda’s network and transferred the money. A report from Uganda’s state newspaper, citing unnamed sources, revealed that a hacking group based in Southeast Asia was responsible for the theft. Part of the stolen funds were reportedly sent to Japan. However, the bank has recover half of the stolen amount.

Uganda’s President has ordered further investigations into the cyber attack.

This incident is part of a growing trend of cyber attacks on banks and financial institutions in Uganda, including telecom companies. Police officials have stated that some banks hesitate to publicly acknowledge such attacks.
