NEWYORK: Business leaders are relieved after President-elect Donald Trump appointed Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary. After controversial picks for other cabinet roles, Bessent’s selection is seen as a safer choice.

Bessent, a hedge fund executive with broad experience in global markets, calmed concerns among business circles. His bipartisan history and expertise as an investor have been well received.

JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon, a prominent Wall Street figure, also supports Bessent. Bessent has worked alongside top investors like George Soros and Stanley Druckenmiller.

The Treasury Secretary role is crucial, especially with Trump’s focus on economic issues. Bessent’s job will be to steer Trump’s economic agenda.

Many hope Bessent will temper some of Trump’s more extreme policies, like aggressive tariffs and deportations. He’s seen as a moderating influence, understanding the risks of tariffs like the ones that contributed to the Great Depression.

Despite positive reactions from investors, not everyone is on board. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized Bessent, suggesting his policies benefit the wealthy and won’t help working-class Americans.

Bessent has defended tariffs, claiming they won’t cause inflation if not paired with increased government spending. However, many economists warn that tariffs could raise prices.

Bessent was chosen over Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, who had also been a candidate for Treasury Secretary. Some CEOs were wary of Lutnick’s style.

Critics, like Larry Summers, warn that Trump’s economic policies could lead to inflation, with higher tariffs and labor shortages hurting the economy.

Progressive groups also oppose Bessent’s appointment, fearing it will lead to tax cuts for the rich rather than addressing the needs of working families.
