Monterey: Newly released police documents provide further insight into a 2017 sexual assault accusation involving Pete Hegseth, the former Fox News host and Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense. The documents, obtained by USA TODAY, detail the claims of a woman who alleges Hegseth assaulted her in a hotel room after an event in Monterey, California.

According to the police report, the woman—referred to as “Jane Doe”—told investigators that she remembered Hegseth preventing her from leaving the hotel room. She also said she repeatedly told him “no,” but was unsure about many details of the incident. The report indicates that she suspected her drink had been tampered with, as she had been drinking champagne prior to the alleged assault.

The woman sought medical attention several days later and was examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner, but the details of the alleged assault were hazy in her memory. She mentioned that after the encounter, Hegseth threw a towel at her, asking if she was “okay” and telling her to “clean it up.”

Hegseth, in a police interview conducted on October 26, 2017, confirmed that he and the woman had been drinking together and went to his hotel room. He acknowledged that they had moments where they expressed hesitation but maintained that the encounter was consensual. Hegseth also admitted that he ejaculated during the incident.

Despite concluding its investigation, the Monterey Police Department forwarded the case to the District Attorney’s Office for possible charges. However, the Monterey County DA declined to press charges, and the case was closed without criminal prosecution.

Hegseth has consistently denied the allegations, with his attorney reiterating that the former television host is “completely innocent.” The attorney also emphasized that Hegseth and the woman had a consensual interaction. Reports have indicated that a financial settlement was reached between Hegseth and the woman, though no details have been confirmed publicly.

The report was initially withheld but was made public after Hegseth requested the release of the file in 2021, leading to the disclosure of the redacted documents. This release brings renewed attention to the 2017 incident and has sparked further discussion about Hegseth’s past and the allegations made against him.
