Gaza: A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah appears imminent, according to a regional source who spoke to CNN on Sunday. This comes as Israeli airstrikes have caused a significant rise in casualties in Lebanon, pushing the death toll to over 3,000 since mid-September.
The source indicated that while a ceasefire deal is closer than ever, it is not yet finalized. Both US and Israeli officials have emphasized that no official approval has been given to mediators to move forward with the agreement.
“We are heading in the right direction, but some critical issues remain,” a representative for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
Hezbollah is currently weighing a proposal from the US and Israel, which suggests a 60-day pause in hostilities. This proposal could form the groundwork for a more permanent ceasefire.
The conflict escalated in mid-September after Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in solidarity with Hamas, leading to Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon. The Israeli offensive has targeted Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah, and has caused extensive damage and loss of life.
US mediator Amos Hochstein has been in discussions with regional leaders in an attempt to secure a ceasefire agreement.
