NEW YORK: Chinese crypto founder Justin Sun bought a banana artwork for $6.2m at an auction.

The piece, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, featured a banana taped to a wall.

Sun purchased it at a luxury hotel in Hong Kong. After winning, he called the banana “iconic” and ate it in front of journalists and influencers.

He said the banana tasted “much better than others” and was “really good.”

Sun had planned to eat the banana from the start, calling it part of the artwork’s history.

He added that the artwork represented a cultural trend linking art, memes, and the crypto world.

At the event, every guest received a banana and duct tape as a souvenir.
