Bogotá: In a major international drug bust, authorities captured six so-called “narco subs” carrying cocaine as part of a massive operation led by Colombia. The operation, which involved 62 countries, resulted in the seizure of over 1,400 metric tons of drugs, mostly marijuana.
Head of Colombia’s Navy operations reported that among the drugs seized, 225 metric tons of cocaine were found, with 5 tons located on a semi-submersible vessel.
This vessel, intercepted in Pacific waters, was headed from Colombia to Australia, marking the third such “narco sub” discovered along this route.
The discovery was made possible after the first “narco sub” was found in Colombian waters. Grisales confirmed that cooperation with Australian authorities helped track down this latest shipment. However, Australian police have not publicly commented on the seizure.
Australian officials have long warned that drug cartels are increasingly targeting the country due to the high demand and lucrative market for cocaine. The rise in cocaine use and high street prices have made Australia an attractive destination for international drug traffickers.
The discovery of the 225 tons of cocaine is part of a growing global effort to combat drug trafficking. The United Nations has reported a record-high global cocaine production of 2,700 tons in 2022.
