Amman: A Jordanian court has sentenced former parliamentarian Imad al-Adwan to 10 years of hard labor for his involvement in smuggling weapons and gold into Palestinian territories. Al-Adwan, a former senator and one of the youngest members in Jordan’s parliament, was found guilty of orchestrating illegal shipments to the West Bank.

According to Arab media reports, Al-Adwan, along with three other defendants, was convicted of smuggling firearms and gold. The three other co-defendants received sentences of 10 years each, while one individual was handed a 15-year prison term.

The charges stem from an April 2023 incident in which Israeli forces arrested al-Adwan for his role in the illicit trade. Israeli authorities reported that he was apprehended while attempting to smuggle weapons and gold into the West Bank. In response, Jordan’s Prosecutor General filed charges against Al-Adwan in May 2023, after his parliamentary membership was revoked.

At 36 years old, Al-Adwan was one of the youngest members of Jordan’s parliament at the time of his arrest. His conviction has drawn significant attention to the growing issue of arms trafficking in the region.
