ROME: Pope Francis has called for an inquiry to determine whether Israel’s military actions in Gaza meet the criteria for “genocide,” according to excerpts from a forthcoming book set to be released ahead of the pontiff’s 2025 jubilee year.

This marks the first time Pope Francis has publicly advocated for a formal investigation into the possibility of genocide following Israel’s recent operations in Gaza. In previous remarks made in September, the Pope described Israel’s attacks in Gaza and Lebanon as “immoral” and “disproportionate,” adding that Israel’s military actions appeared to violate international rules of war.

Israel has firmly rejected any claims of genocide, insisting that its military operations in Gaza are part of its right to defend itself against Hamas and other militant groups. The Vatican’s call for an investigation adds to the growing international debate over the ongoing conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
