ASTANA: Russian President Vladimir Putin has applauded Donald Trump as an “smart and experienced” pioneer who could further develop relations between the U.S. furthermore, Russia. Speaking at a security summit in Kazakhstan, Putin contrasted his positive view of Trump with criticism of President Joe Biden, particularly over Biden’s decision to send longer-range missiles to Ukraine.

Putin argued that Biden’s actions, including the approval of ATACMS missiles for Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory, have made things more difficult for the next U.S. president. He suggested that relations could improve once Trump takes office in January.

“The newly elected president is intelligent and experienced,” Putin said, adding that he believes Trump will find a solution to the issues facing both countries. His comments were a sharp contrast to the tense relationship Moscow has had with Biden’s administration over the war in Ukraine.

Trump, who has promised to end the war in Ukraine quickly, has not clearly stated whether he supports Ukraine’s victory over Russia. Recently, he appointed General Keith Kellogg as his special envoy to help with peace efforts in Ukraine.

During the summit, Putin also expressed concerns for Trump’s safety, mentioning two recent assassination attempts on the former president. He criticized the legal challenges Trump has faced, including his conviction in a business-related trial earlier this year.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Putin issued a new threat to use Russia’s Oreshnik missile, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, against Ukraine’s military and key decision-making centers, including in Kyiv. He warned that Russia would use whatever weapons it deems necessary to protect its interests.

Putin responded cryptically when asked if the “decision-making centers” were military or political targets, saying, “Anything is possible.”
