Scottsdale: Blue Yonder, a software company that provides services to major grocery stores in both the US and the UK, was struck by a ransomware attack this weekend, disrupting operations for several large retail chains according to CNN.

The Arizona-based company, acquired by Panasonic in 2021, confirmed the attack targeted its private cloud services but not its public cloud.

Blue Yonder didn’t name the affected clients but communicated with US customers, assuring them it was working to minimize disruptions. The issue was discovered on November 21, 2024, when the ransomware attack disrupted managed services.

In the UK, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s faced significant challenges. Morrisons, with nearly 500 stores, switched to backup systems, but delays in goods delivery occurred. Sainsbury’s implemented contingency measures to manage the disruption.

In the US, Blue Yonder serves grocery chains like Albertsons and Kroger, but neither company commented on the attack.

Blue Yonder’s software is also used by Proctor & Gamble and Anheuser-Busch, but they did not comment either.

Blue Yonder said it was making “steady progress” in restoring services but did not give a recovery timeline. The company is working closely with affected clients to resolve the issues.

The attack highlights the growing threat of ransomware in supply chains, exposing vulnerabilities in critical digital systems.
