BANGKOK: A group of over 200 monkeys ran amok in the streets of a Thai town, overwhelming local authorities and prompting police to barricade their own station for safety. The chaotic scene unfolded in Lopburi, a city known for its large population of wild macaques, as the monkeys descended on the area, reportedly scavenging for food and causing havoc.

The unusual disturbance saw the monkeys swarm the town, breaking into shops, stealing food, and causing general mayhem. Authorities attempted to control the situation, but the sheer number of monkeys proved too much for local police, who were forced to take refuge inside their station and lock the doors to avoid further chaos.

Witnesses described the scene as wild, with the monkeys showing little fear of humans and even becoming aggressive at times. The police station, which is close to the city center, was the focal point of the riot as the animals gathered in large numbers, blocking roads and creating a scene of confusion.

Locals have expressed frustration over the growing problem, as the monkey population in the area has exploded in recent years. With limited food sources in their natural habitat, the monkeys have increasingly ventured into urban areas, raiding markets and residences in search of food.

Authorities are now considering measures to manage the monkey population, which has become a serious nuisance in Lopburi, a city often referred to as Thailand’s “Monkey City.”
