ISLAMABAD: In an interview with Mehdi Hasan Aleema Khan, sister of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan. She shed light on her brother’s prolonged detention and the mounting challenges in Pakistan.

Imran Khan’s Legal Predicament

Aleema described the unprecedented legal onslaught her brother is facing. “He now has 280 cases filed against him,” she revealed. These cases, largely criticized by international observers, stem from accusations that include absurd allegations, such as conflicts of interest for charitable activities while in office.

Aleema highlighted a case involving University, a charity educational institution. Prosecutors claim that founding it during his premiership represents a conflict of interest. “Even our lawyers were shocked by the absurdity,” she noted.

A Broader Crisis of Governance

The family believes Imran Khan has become the symbol of systemic persecution in Pakistan. “If this can happen to Imran Khan, imagine what is happening to thousands of others,” Aleema remarked, pointing to the growing number of politically motivated cases and detentions across the country.

She noted the breakdown of trust in Pakistan’s legal and judicial systems, labeling the current approach a “mockery” of justice. Thousands of cases involving political opponents remain unresolved, often resulting in indefinite detentions without trial.

Personal Ordeals and Accusations

Aleema herself, along with her sister, faced arrest under bizarre allegations. “They claimed we were making a bomb,” she said, calling the charges baseless. She described their detention as part of a wider intimidation campaign targeting political dissidents, including women and students.

Their experiences mirror a broader clampdown on dissent. “There are 70-year-old women and 18-year-old students held in military custody,” she revealed, underscoring the systematic repression.

May 9th Incidents: A Turning Point

Aleema criticized the government’s response to the May 9th protests, where thousands were arrested following alleged rioting. She disputed the government’s narrative, asserting that no credible evidence has surfaced linking her brother or his party to the alleged violence.

She also denounced the excessive force employed during protests. “There’s video evidence of live ammunition being fired and bodies being removed under cover of darkness,” she said. The government, however, denies these claims, calling the casualty figures exaggerated.

Resilience Amidst Adversity

Despite the intense pressure, Aleema affirmed the family’s unwavering resolve. Imran Khan has refused exile offers, choosing instead to face trial. “He said, ‘I will clear my name,’” she shared.

The struggle has taken its toll, but faith keeps the family strong. “Allah helps when you’re working for a greater cause,” Aleema concluded.

A Growing Call for Action

In recent days, even international actors, including U.S. officials close to President-elect Donald Trump, have voiced concerns over Imran Khan’s detention.

The crisis in Pakistan, Aleema stressed, isn’t just about one man. “This is about justice for all and saving the country from a complete collapse,” she emphasized.
