KHARTOUM: At least 127 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Sudan over two days due to bombardments and shelling, rights activists reported. The ongoing 20-month conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has escalated, with efforts for a ceasefire faltering.
The Sudanese army intensified airstrikes on regions controlled by the RSF, while the RSF retaliated with raids and artillery targeting populated civilian areas. On Monday, more than eight barrel bombs hit the market in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, killing over 100 people and injuring hundreds.
Although the Sudanese army denied responsibility for the attack in which 127 killed, it claimed the right to target any RSF-controlled location. The RSF did not respond to requests for comment.
A video shared by Reuters showed bloodied bodies in the market, with fires burning and people rescuing others from the wreckage. Some survivors were heard crying and praying for the dead, while others screamed in horror.
