DHAKA:  The Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to launch an investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family, accusing them of corruption involving a staggering 80,000 crore taka. According to reports, the investigation includes allegations of embezzlement linked to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, with a specific claim of 5 billion dollars (59,000 crore taka) being siphoned off from the project. Other corruption activities associated with this and other projects have raised the estimated total to 80,000 crore taka.

The Dhaka Tribune reports that those implicated in the scandal include Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajib Wazed Joy, and her niece Tulip Siddiq, among other family members. The accusations suggest that the former prime minister’s family was involved in irregularities not only in the Rooppur project but also in other initiatives, such as the Ashrayan project.

Allegations on Hasina

Corruption allegations regarding the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant first emerged in a series of newspaper reports published on August 19, which later became part of a petition. These reports referred to information from the Global Defence Corporation, claiming that Sheikh Hasina, Sajib Wazed Joy, and Tulip Siddiq used a foreign bank to embezzle 5 billion dollars. The scandal has also seen accusations that Sheikh Hasina herself was directly involved in misappropriating over 5 billion dollars from the Rooppur project.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is Bangladesh’s largest and most expensive project, with an estimated cost of 12.65 billion dollars. Given its scope and importance, the alleged corruption surrounding this project has sparked significant concern.

It is also important to note that Sheikh Hasina, following massive public protests, resigned from office several months ago and fled to India. Since then, an interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been overseeing the country. The ongoing investigation by the ACC could have significant political implications for Bangladesh’s future governance and its fight against corruption.

This investigation into Sheikh Hasina and her family has already garnered significant attention, both domestically and internationally.
