Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government leader, Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, has hinted at possible elections by the end of 2025, provided electoral reforms are completed.

In his national address on December 16, marking Bangladesh’s Victory Day, Interim Leader Yunus said, “If electoral reforms are finalized and political consensus achieved, elections could be held by late 2025.”

The interim government took charge after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled to India following massive public protests earlier this year. Yunus emphasized that preparing an accurate voter list and securing political agreement are prerequisites for the elections.

He also noted that while basic reforms could enable elections within two years, further amendments could push the timeline forward by at least six months.

“Political consensus and reform completion will determine the timing of elections, but our aim is to restore democracy responsibly,” Yunus stated.

The Nobel laureate’s government has pledged to bring stability to Bangladesh following political unrest, ensuring credible and transparent elections.
