Sana’a: An Indian nurse, Nimesha Priya, has had her death sentence upheld in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni man.
According to Indian media reports, Nimesha Priya, a resident of Kerala, received the death penalty approval from Yemeni President Rashad Al-Alimi.
Following the approval of the death sentence by the Yemeni president, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement, assuring that Nimesha Priya was being provided with all possible assistance.
Reports from India state that Nimesha Priya, 36, went to Yemen in 2008 to support her parents. After working in various hospitals, she eventually opened her own clinic.
In 2014, she came into contact with a man named Talal Abdul Mahdi, as local laws in Yemen require foreign businesses to partner with locals.
According to Indian media, after a deterioration in their relationship, Nimesha filed a complaint against Mahdi, which led to his arrest in 2016. However, even after his release, Mahdi continued to threaten Nimesha.
The conflict between the two escalated in 2017. Nimesha allegedly administered a sleeping injection to Mahdi to retrieve her passport, but the dose was lethal, leading to his death.
Subsequently, Nimesha was arrested while attempting to flee Yemen. In 2018, a murder charge was filed against her.
Indian media reports say that in 2020, a trial court in Sana’a sentenced Nimesha Priya to death, and in November 2023, Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the ruling.
It is noteworthy that Nimesha Priya, a resident of Kerala, had moved to Yemen at the age of 19 in 2008.
