The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was on a mission to monitor the plant’s safety amid concerns it could become a flashpoint in Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The attack, which occurred during a convoy’s journey, destroyed the back of the IAEA vehicle but left the two passengers unharmed. The IAEA confirmed the drone was a kamikaze-style weapon and was spotted by the driver of another vehicle in the convoy before it struck.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, attributing it to Russia and suggesting the vehicle had been deliberately targeted. “This attack shows Russia’s disregard for international law and safety protocols,” he said, sharing an image of the damaged vehicle on social media.
While Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that its forces had ensured the safety of the IAEA team, they did not address the drone strike directly. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi also expressed strong condemnation of the attack.
