DAMASCUS: The mausoleum of Hafez al-Assad, father of Bashar al-Assad, was set on fire in Syria’s Qardaha village.

Videos on social media show significant damage to the grave site in Latakia province. The fire’s origin remains unknown.

Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria for 30 years before his death in 2000, and his son Bashar succeeded him.

Bashar al-Assad, who ruled for 24 years, was overthrown in the recent uprising that took place over the weekend.
