LONDON: Ex-England rugby player Tom Voyce is believed to have died after his car was swept into a flooded river in northeast England, local authorities confirmed.

Police suspect Voyce, 43, tried to cross Abberwick Ford in his vehicle before being swept away by strong currents during heavy flooding caused by Storm Darragh.

Despite recovering his car, authorities have yet to find Voyce and are navigating “very challenging conditions” in the ongoing search.

Tom Voyce earned nine caps for England between 2001 and 2006 and had an illustrious club career with Bath, Wasps, Gloucester, and London Welsh. In 2004, he set a record for the fastest Premiership try, scoring in just 9.63 seconds.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s loved ones,” England Rugby shared, echoing the sentiments of his former teammates and fans.
