KEIV: Ukraine reported that North Korean soldiers, fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region, incurred heavy casualties during weekend clashes. According to Ukraine’s defense intelligence service, North Korean military units, which arrived last month, participated in assaults near three villages close to the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Fighting Intensifies Near Plekhovo, Vorozhba, and Martynovka

The weekend combat occurred near the villages of Plekhovo, Vorozhba, and Martynovka, where North Korean forces reportedly suffered at least 30 casualties.

Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed the casualty report, acknowledging that North Korean soldiers had been engaged in combat with Russian forces. Ryder mentioned that these troops had been integrated into Russian units and primarily serve in infantry roles. He added that since their deployment in early December, they had been involved in intense combat operations, which made them legitimate military targets for Ukrainian forces.

Ukrainian military blogger Yuriy Butusov reported on Facebook that the North Korean infantry attacks relied on traditional Korean War tactics of wave-based assaults, aided by heavy Russian artillery support.

Ukraine believes about 12,000 North Korean soldiers have been deployed in the Kursk region to support Russian units. These troops have played a major role in the battle to recapture territory lost to Ukraine during the August offensive. The Pentagon also estimates there are roughly 12,000 North Koreans fighting alongside Russian troops.

Ukrainians Repel North Korean-Assisted Russian Assault

A major Russian and North Korean assault near Plekhovo was repelled over the weekend despite heavy fire and attacks.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive efforts and successful tactical movements enabled Ukrainian forces to regain control over their positions despite the ongoing North Korean-led assault.

Ukraine Doubts Effectiveness of North Korean Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier confirmed North Korean casualties from these clashes, further raising questions about the effectiveness of the support from North Korean soldiers.

This episode has continued to fuel tensions as both nations struggle for control in a fiercely contested region.
