TEHRAN: Iran’s parliament has passed a controversial new “chastity and hijab” law, intensifying existing dress restrictions that have already sparked protests and threatened the stability of the regime.

The legislation was approved on Sunday by both the hardline parliament and the Guardian Council, which oversees laws for compliance with the constitution and Islamic principles.

The law now awaits the signature of President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has expressed opposition to the bill. As a reformist elected on a platform advocating for greater freedoms, Pezeshkian has voiced concerns about the vague nature of the law and its potential to deepen societal divisions. Despite his objections, his role in signing the bill is largely ceremonial, leaving him little ability to prevent it from taking effect.

Hijab Law introduces a three-year trial period to enforce stricter penalties for violations of dress codes, covering both men and women. For women, this includes prohibiting tight clothing and outfits that expose parts of the body, while men are banned from wearing clothes that expose the shoulders, chest, or upper legs.

Pezeshkian shared his thoughts on the law in a post on social media, stating, “We should not do anything that disturbs the harmony and empathy of society. We need dialogue on the issue.”
