LONDON: Toomaj Salehi, an Iranian rapper and outspoken critic of the government, has been released from prison after being detained for over two years. His legal team announced the news on Monday, revealing that Salehi, aged 32, had spent a total of 753 days in Isfahan’s Dastgerd prison.

Toomaj Salehi, who was arrested in October 2022, was targeted for his vocal support of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests, which erupted following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Jhina Amini. Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman, passed away after being arrested by Iran’s morality police for allegedly breaching the country’s rigid dress code.

Salehi had used his platform as an artist and activist to publicly condemn the regime, often posting videos of himself alongside protestors and writing lyrics that criticized government repression.
