ROME:  Italy has introduced a ban on self-check-ins at Airbnbs, requiring renters to register in person at local police stations.

The new law, aimed at combating potential terrorism, mandates that hosts remove key boxes and keypads used for self-check-ins. Law enforcement will oversee the implementation of these changes.

The government explains that the regulation is designed to improve public safety and prevent risks related to accommodating individuals linked to criminal or terrorist activities.

This move follows concerns about Italy being overwhelmed by tourists, especially with upcoming major events like the Vatican’s Holy Jubilee in 2025 and the Winter Olympics in Cortina in 2026, both of which have already seen a surge in short-term rental bookings.
