LONDON:  A UK court has sentenced the father and stepmother of 10-year-old British-Pakistani girl, Sara Sharif, to life imprisonment for her murder.

On Tuesday, the court handed down the verdict to Sara’s father, Irfan Sharif, and her stepmother, Beinash Batool, after declaring them guilty on December 11. While sentencing Irfan Sharif, the court ruled that his minimum imprisonment period will be 40 years.

Sara Sharif ‘s stepmother, Beinash Batool, was also sentenced to life, with the court determining that she must serve at least 33 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

Sara’s uncle, who was acquitted of murder charges, received a 16-year prison sentence for allowing her death to occur under his watch.

Following Sara Sharif’s death in London last year, her parents fled to Pakistan. They were apprehended at Gatwick Airport in September 2023 upon returning from Dubai.

Prosecution details revealed that Sara had been subjected to severe and prolonged physical abuse before her death. During the trial, Irfan Sharif initially denied all allegations. However, on the seventh day of court proceedings, he confessed, admitting to repeatedly abusing his daughter over several weeks. “Sara died because of me,” he admitted before the court.

Before announcing the December 11 verdict, the judge addressed the court, acknowledging the high emotional tension and urging everyone to maintain respect for the proceedings.
