BEIRUT: Lebanon has announced it is increasing its military presence along the Syria border following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

According to reports, the Lebanese army stated that it is reinforcing its border presence with Syria after rebels seized Damascus and toppled Assad’s government.

The Lebanese military confirmed that, in response to the rapidly changing situation and regional instability, it has bolstered its units monitoring the northern and eastern borders. Enhanced surveillance and control measures have also been implemented.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati stated that he discussed the situation at the Syrian border with Army Commander Joseph Aoun and heads of security forces via phone.

Lebanese authorities also noted that Lebanon is currently hosting around 2 million Syrian refugees, with over 800,000 registered with the United Nations.

The increasing military presence is seen as a precautionary measure to manage the ongoing regional uncertainties and ensure security along the volatile border with Syria.
