TelAviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had successful surgery on Sunday to remove his prostate, according to hospital officials. This medical procedure occurred during a turbulent period, with the ongoing Gaza conflict and his corruption trial looming large.

At age 75, Netanyahu has dealt with multiple health concerns, despite projecting an image of vigor and resilience. He once claimed to work 18-hour days during his trial, emphasizing his commitment to leadership. His extended time in office—totaling 17 years—may have also taken a toll on his health.

Netanyahu’s procedure resulted in the postponement of several days of court testimony for his corruption trial. His lawyer, Amit Hadad, explained that the Prime Minister’s sedation and hospitalization necessitated the rescheduling. Dr. Ofer Gofrit from Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center confirmed the operation’s success, stating there were no signs of malignancy.

Recovery and Leadership Transition

Following the procedure, Netanyahu was moved to an underground recovery unit designed to withstand missile attacks. His recovery period is expected to last several days, during which Justice Minister Yariv Levin acted as interim prime minister.

The operation took place against the backdrop of significant regional challenges. Mediators continue urging for a ceasefire in Gaza, while fighting escalates between Israel and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

A Leader Under Scrutiny

Netanyahu is part of a generation of older global leaders, such as President Joe Biden, 82, and President-elect Donald Trump, 78, who face public concern over health.

Common among older men, prostate issues are generally treatable, but such procedures can affect a leader’s image. For Netanyahu, maintaining a strong image is critical, particularly during wartime.

Uncertainty in a Volatile Region

Netanyahu’s absence, even briefly, occurs at a sensitive moment for Israel. International observers closely monitor events, with hopes for a resolution in Gaza and stability amid the region’s turmoil.

In his statement, Netanyahu expressed gratitude to his medical team for their care. Meanwhile, political and wartime pressures remain ever-present, emphasizing the delicate balance of leadership during a challenging time.
