Riyadh: The long-awaited driverless metro service in Riyadh is finally open to the public. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced that Lines 1, 4, and 6 of the metro system are now operational, while Lines 2 and 5 are expected to open by December 15, 2024. Line 3 will begin operations on January 5, 2025.

A Major Step for Riyadh’s Transportation
The Riyadh Metro system stretches over 176 kilometers and consists of six lines with 85 transit stations. This advanced metro service is part of the city’s efforts to modernize and reduce traffic congestion, a growing problem in the capital.

Solving Riyadh’s Traffic Woes
In recent years, Riyadh has faced severe traffic jams. With major international events like the 2030 World Expo and FIFA World Cup 2034 scheduled to take place in the city, solving this issue has become even more urgent. Once fully operational, the metro is expected to carry over 3.6 million passengers daily.

Project Delays and Costs
The metro project, which started in 2012, delays have pushed the opening date back. While the exact cost of the project has not been disclosed, reports suggest the budget could be around $35 billion.

Future Expansion Plans
The Royal Commission also revealed plans for a seventh metro line, though work on it has yet to begin. With Riyadh’s population expected to grow from 8 million to over 10 million in the next decade, these transportation upgrades are crucial for the city’s development.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030
This project is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader plan to transform the country into a major tourist destination. The goal is to attract 70 million tourists by 2030, up from 27 million in 2023.
