Russia’s Increasing Executions of Ukrainian Prisoners of War: A Grim Reality

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen horrifying acts of violence, with the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) becoming an alarming trend. These acts, captured on video and witnessed by drones, paint a disturbing picture of systemic brutality.

The Shocking Reality of POW Executions

In March 2023, a harrowing video surfaced of Ukrainian sniper Oleksandr Matsievsky. Captured by Russian forces, he stood defiantly smoking a cigarette before declaring, “Glory to Ukraine!” Moments later, he was executed, his lifeless body falling near a grave he had been forced to dig.

This is not an isolated incident. Reports in October 2024 revealed the execution of nine Ukrainian soldiers in Russia’s Kursk region. Among the victims, drone operator Ruslan Holubenko was identified by his family from a photo of half-naked bodies lying on the ground. His mother’s heartbreaking recognition came from a pair of underwear she had bought for him.

The list of atrocities includes beheadings, summary executions, and soldiers being lined up and shot.Certain executions were recorded by Russian troops, while others were captured by Ukrainian drones monitoring the scenes. These crimes often occur in remote woods or fields, making precise verification difficult, though investigators have confirmed key details in several cases.

Alarming Numbers and Trends

Ukrainian prosecutors report that 147 Ukrainian POWs have been executed since the invasion began, with 127 cases recorded in 2024 alone. According to Yuri Belousov, head of the War Department at Ukraine’s Prosecutor-General’s Office, these executions have become increasingly systematic, particularly since late 2023.

“The numbers are rising, and the patterns suggest a deliberate policy,” says Belousov. Evidence indicates that instructions for these acts are being issued, contradicting international humanitarian law, which explicitly prohibits the execution of POWs under the Third Geneva Convention.

Impunity Fuels Atrocities

Despite mounting evidence, Russia has shown no signs of investigating these crimes. Even discussing such allegations within Russia can lead to severe punishment. Russian President Vladimir Putin claims his forces adhere to international legal standards, but actions on the ground tell a different story.

Human Rights Watch deputy director Rachel Denber highlights the role of impunity in perpetuating these crimes. “What instructions are commanders giving their units? What steps are being taken to investigate? The absence of accountability raises questions about systemic complicity,” she asserts.

Ukrainian Response and Accountability

While Ukrainian forces have also faced accusations of executing Russian POWs, these claims are fewer and are being actively investigated by Ukrainian authorities. So far, no charges have been filed, but the Ukrainian prosecution service emphasizes its commitment to addressing such allegations.

The Human Toll

For families of missing soldiers, the uncertainty is unbearable. Ruslan Holubenko’s mother, who still hopes for her son’s return, expresses the anguish shared by many: “I’ll do everything possible to bring him back. I refuse to believe he’s gone.”

Global Implications

The systemic execution of Ukrainian POWs underscores the need for international accountability. Organizations like Human Rights Watch urge thorough investigations and consequences for those responsible.

The rising brutality in this conflict is a stark reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the urgent need for justice and adherence to international law. As these atrocities continue, the world must not look away.
