SEOUL:Â South Korean lawmakers have called for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol following his sudden martial law decree, which was swiftly rescinded hours later, plunging the country into a severe political crisis. The unexpected announcement on Tuesday evening set off a standoff with parliament, which strongly opposed his attempt to restrict political activities and impose media censorship. Armed troops even entered the National Assembly building in Seoul to enforce the decree.
In response to the dramatic move, opposition lawmakers have united to draft an impeachment bill, which they plan to present for a vote within 72 hours. “The focus of the National Assembly must be to immediately halt the president’s actions and pass the impeachment proposal as quickly as possible,” said Hwang Un-ha, a member of the coalition.
A presidential official also confirmed that Yoon’s chief of staff and top advisers have offered their resignations due to the ensuing crisis. The political fallout from the martial law incident continues to intensify, with calls for accountability growing across the nation.
