SEOUL:Â South Korea’s opposition parties have filed an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol following his failed martial law attempt.
According to international media, the main opposition party, the Democratic Party, along with five other opposition groups, has submitted the impeachment motion. A vote is expected by Friday.
Earlier, President Yoon lifted the martial law he had imposed. The military returned to barracks after briefly surrounding Parliament.
Reports indicate that the military had surrounded the National Assembly, prompting lawmakers to vote against the martial law.
After the declaration, National Assembly Speaker Won Shik condemned the move, stating that it was unlawful and that lawmakers would defend democracy alongside the people.
The opposition parties strongly criticized the president, calling his actions a betrayal of the nation. They demanded his resignation after reversing the martial law decision.
