SEOUL: In a dramatic turn of events, a motion to impeach South Korea’s President, Yoon Suk-yeol, failed on Saturday. The President’s ruling party boycotted the vote, with over 100 of its members walking out of Parliament before the Impeachment Motion began.

For the impeachment to succeed, 200 out of 300 lawmakers needed to support it, but the boycotted vote left the motion without the required backing. Earlier, Yoon had imposed a brief martial law, which was rescinded within six hours after Parliament rejected it.

Opposition members vehemently protested, chanting slogans against the President, while his supporters were called cowards for their walkout.

A new vote on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11.
