Damascus: On Sunday, Syria’s capital erupted in celebration as news spread of President Bashar al-Assad’s fall. Rebel forces claimed they had entered Damascus, marking the end of his long rule. Residents filled the streets, cheering and firing guns into the air in jubilation. Many mosques played festive chants, urging people to stay home during the uncertainty.
The rebel faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham initiated a rapid offensive on November 27. They captured key cities like Aleppo and Hama before reaching the capital. Reports indicated that Assad had fled the city, leaving his regime in disarray. In dramatic scenes, rebel fighters appeared on state television, declaring victory over the “tyrant.”
In Damascus, celebrations were palpable. “I can’t believe I’m living this moment,” said Amer Batha, a local resident. He expressed relief and hope for a new chapter in Syria’s history. In the Shaghur neighborhood, women celebrated from balconies, throwing rice at passing fighters.
Reactions varied widely. Waddah Abd Rabbo, a pro-government editor, defended the media’s role under Assad, while famed actor Ayman Zeidan reflected on the culture of fear that had silenced many. “We are entering a new phase,” he wrote, embracing the potential for change.
International leaders also reacted. U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration monitored the situation closely, while former President Donald Trump claimed that Assad’s protector, Russia, had lost interest in supporting him. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for an emergency meeting to discuss the evolving crisis.
Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy for Syria, emphasized the need for stable and inclusive governance moving forward. He urged dialogue and respect for human rights as Syrians rebuild their society.
Meanwhile, a senior UAE official warned against chaos in the wake of Assad’s departure. Anwar Gargash encouraged Syrians to collaborate and prevent further violence as the country transitions into this uncertain future.
