Damascus: Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, leader of the Syrian rebel group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has stated that the ongoing uprising in Syria aims to dismantle President Bashar al-Assad ’s government.
In an interview with CNN from an undisclosed location in Syria, Jolani expressed that Assad’s regime is doomed to collapse. He claimed, “The seeds of this regime’s downfall have always existed within it.”
Jolani criticized the foreign backing of Bashar al-Assad ‘s rule, saying Iran tried to restore and extend its lifespan while Russia also provided significant support. Despite these efforts, he insisted that the regime’s demise is inevitable.
He further called for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Syria, emphasizing, “Once this regime falls, the presence of foreign forces in Syria will no longer be necessary.”
Recently, HTS intensified its operations, capturing the historic city of Aleppo and forcing government forces to retreat from Hama after heavy clashes.
The rebel group, which was previously linked to al-Qaeda, has shown renewed strength in its fight against Assad’s military, challenging both domestic and international supporters of the current regime.
