DAMASCUS: In response to political shifts, Syria’s football federation announces a new team kit symbolizing renewal and progress.

Syria’s Football Federation has announced a significant change to the national team’s uniform and logo, reflecting the country’s political changes and new era. The team’s traditional red kit has been replaced with green, symbolizing renewal and progress.

This decision follows major political developments in Syria, including the capture of the capital, Damascus, by opposition forces and the flight of President Bashar al-Assad to Russia, marking the end of a 13-year civil war. These events have paved the way for a new political leadership and national identity.

The Syrian Football Federation shared images of players in the new green kit on Facebook, calling the change “historic.” The federation stated that this was the first major transformation in Syria’s sports culture, one that is free from nepotism, bias, and corruption.

Since the establishment of the Syrian Football Association in 1936, Syria’s national football team has participated in several international tournaments, including the AFC Asian Cup and FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite challenges posed by political instability and a lack of resources, Syrian football saw regional successes during the 1980s and 1990s.

Football is immensely popular in Syria, serving not only as a source of entertainment but also as a unifying force for the country’s diverse social and political groups.
