WASHINGTON: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a presidential envoy for special missions, signaling a focus on critical diplomatic challenges. Grenell, who previously served as acting director of national intelligence and ambassador to Germany, will address issues in global hotspots like Venezuela and North Korea.

“Ric will tackle key international tensions, including negotiations with Venezuela’s Maduro regime and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un,” Trump announced on Truth Social.

As U.S. envoy, Grenell is expected to drive policies aimed at U.S. adversaries. Trump, who begins his term next month, hopes for direct talks with Kim to reduce the risks of conflict. Grenell’s past involvement in Serbia-Kosovo negotiations and sanctions policies against Venezuela positions him for these complex tasks.

In 2019, Venezuela’s leader Nicolas Maduro severed ties with the U.S. after Trump imposed sanctions targeting the country’s oil sector. Trump’s re-engagement strategy remains unclear, though Maduro views the incoming term as an opportunity for diplomatic renewal.

North Korea continues to expand its missile capabilities, ignoring diplomatic overtures during the Biden administration while deepening ties with Russia. Trump’s plan to address this challenge could mark a pivotal shift in U.S. foreign policy.

Grenell’s selection underscores Trump’s focus on reshaping U.S. approaches to its most contentious foreign relations.
