Damascus: A three-member US delegation arrived in Syria’s capital, Damascus, for meetings with key political leaders.
According to international news agencies, the high-level US officials are visiting Damascus today for official talks. The delegation includes Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern Affairs (NEA), Barbara Leaf; US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Roger Carstens; and Senior Advisor for NEA, Daniel Rubinstein.
The US State Department spokesperson stated that the delegation’s primary goal is to engage in meetings with leaders of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) during their visit. The delegation is expected to discuss several key issues, including power transitions within Syria.
Discussion of Key Political Issues
US officials will address various topics, with particular focus on the transfer of political power in Syria. In addition to their meeting with HTS leaders, the delegation plans discussions around Syria’s political landscape, especially in terms of a potential transition. It remains uncertain if these talks will result in substantial changes in the country’s government structures.
The delegation also seeks to address issues affecting Syria’s future and work to gauge the region’s socio-political dynamics. US officials aim to explore potential pathways to improve relations and address persistent regional instability.
Addressing Missing Americans in Syria
As part of their mission, the American delegation will also investigate the whereabouts of US citizens who have gone missing in Syria. The focus will be on gathering any relevant information concerning the status of American nationals, potentially offering solutions for the families affected by disappearances.
Efforts to Connect with Syrian Civil Society
Furthermore, the US delegation will meet with members of Syria’s civil society and community groups. These sessions will provide an opportunity for officials to better understand the local dynamics and concerns that Syria’s everyday people face under current circumstances.
These diplomatic efforts come at a critical time as Syria continues to experience ongoing conflict and instability. The visit underscores the US’s interest in the country’s internal politics and future stability, aiming to establish avenues for dialogue and cooperation with Syrian actors.
