London: A two-year-old boy from Camden, North London, has made history as the youngest person to undergo Nanoknife treatment for cancer and emerge cancer-free. George, diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in his liver and bile duct during the summer of 2023, has become a beacon of hope in the fight against childhood cancer.

A Devastating Diagnosis

RMS, a rare type of soft tissue cancer, turned George’s family’s world upside down. “I will never forget that moment,” shared his father, Jonathan. “It felt like my entire world had collapsed.”

After three rounds of chemotherapy, George’s family explored other options, leading them to the cutting-edge Nanoknife technology.

What is Nanoknife?

Nanoknife is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive cancer treatment that uses electrical currents to destroy cancerous cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. This precision technology allows surgeons to achieve a better margin of clearance around tumors, improving outcomes.

Dr. Sam Godfrey, Science Engagement Lead at Cancer Research UK, describes Nanoknife as “a revolutionary, experimental treatment” that holds promise for treating cancers previously deemed inoperable.

A Groundbreaking Procedure

King’s College Hospital performed George’s surgery after securing a special license to use Nanoknife. George became the youngest person globally and the first child in the UK to receive this groundbreaking treatment on his liver.

“The surgeons managed to remove all of the tumor and achieved clear margins around the removed section of his liver,” Jonathan said. “This was the news we had been hoping and praying for.”

Recovery and Hope

Eighteen months post-treatment, George is cancer-free and thriving. He started nursery school in September 2024, marking a joyful milestone for his family.

Dr. Godfrey noted the global implications of George’s case, saying, “This cutting-edge surgical treatment will inform the treatment of children around the world.”

Recognized Courage

George was honored with the Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People Star Award for his incredible bravery throughout his treatment. His story inspires families and researchers alike, proving the potential of innovative technologies like Nanoknife in the fight against cancer.

Pushing Boundaries in Cancer Treatment

George’s journey highlights the power of persistence, hope, and groundbreaking medical advancements. As his father Jonathan reflected, “We loved that Nanoknife was something new and groundbreaking, and we felt we had some input into making it happen.”

This remarkable case not only celebrates George’s recovery but also paves the way for future innovations in pediatric cancer care.
