Damascus: Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, has been appointed Syria’s transitional president. The announcement came from the Syria Military Operations Command on Wednesday. Al-Sharaa’s Background and Militant Ties

Breaking Away from al Qaeda
After his release, Al-Sharaa returned to Syria to fight Assad’s regime. He founded Jabhat al-Nusra, a group that pledged allegiance to al Qaeda. In 2016, he split from al Qaeda and rebranded his group as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). HTS shifted focus to governing Idlib province.
