Agadez: An Austrian woman was abducted by armed men in Niger’s Agadez city, authorities and Austria’s foreign ministry confirmed.
This is the first known abduction of a European citizen in Niger since the junta took power in 2023.
Austria’s embassy in Algeria, responsible for Niger, is liaising with local authorities about the kidnapping.
Local sources and media identified the victim as Eva Gretzmacher, an aid worker residing in Agadez for over 20 years.

Victim’s Contribution to the Community

Gretzmacher was renowned for her dedication to social causes, especially women’s empowerment and education initiatives.
She established a skills center in 2010, launching projects in education, culture, ecology, and the arts.
Through her development work, she also assisted local NGOs across various sectors.
Her efforts significantly impacted the local community over two decades of residence.

Abduction’s Context and Security Challenges

No group has yet claimed responsibility, and Nigerien authorities have not officially commented on the kidnapping.
Niger has faced ongoing insecurity due to jihadi groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State.
The military junta’s pledge to restore peace has been undermined by increased attacks since July 2023.
Analysts remain skeptical about the junta’s ability to handle the worsening security crisis.

Niger’s Changing Security Partnerships

Niger, once a key Western ally in combating Sahel insurgencies, shifted alliances after the 2023 coup.
The junta severed military ties with Western nations, instead seeking Russia’s assistance as a new security partner.
This shift has raised concerns about the region’s ability to counter rising militant threats.
Niger was one of the last democracies in the Sahel actively collaborating with the West.
