Baku: Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has accused Russia of a “cover-up” over the recent passenger jet crash that claimed 38 lives. The December 25 incident involved Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243, which was en route from Baku to Grozny before being forced to make an emergency landing in Kazakhstan. The crash has further strained relations between the neighboring countries.

Allegations Against Russia

Speaking to the families of the victims and the two surviving flight attendants, Aliyev alleged that preliminary investigations revealed the plane was struck by Russian air defenses. According to Azerbaijan’s state news agency (AZERTAC), the airspace above Grozny was closed only after the plane had been hit.

Aliyev directly held Russia responsible for the tragedy, demanding transparency and accountability. “We demand justice, punishment of the guilty, and humane treatment,” he stated.

Russia’s Response

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed regret over the “tragic incident” but denied responsibility. The Kremlin stated that Russian air defense systems were active at the time due to Ukrainian drone attacks in the region. However, Aliyev criticized the lack of timely measures to close Grozny’s airspace, pointing out failures in coordination between Russia’s armed forces and civil services.

Investigation Progress

Brazilian investigators have extracted data from the plane’s black box recorders, which were analyzed alongside Azerbaijani and international experts to ensure transparency. The data has been sent to Kazakh authorities, who are leading the investigation with Azerbaijan’s cooperation. At the same time, Russia’s investigative committee has initiated a criminal case concerning the tragic incident.

Evidence and Next Steps

Images of the wreckage show what appear to be perforations consistent with shrapnel or debris, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed. Aliyev emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth, stating, “The whole picture of the tragedy will become known, and the perpetrators will be held accountable.”

Tribute to the Crew

Aliyev commended the flight crew for their courage and skill, emphasizing how they worked to save lives during the emergency landing. The Brazilian-made Embraer 190 had passengers from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan on board.

International Implications

This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Aliyev’s use of Russian instead of Azerbaijani during his address signaling the gravity of the accusations. The crash and subsequent allegations add to the growing strain between Azerbaijan and Russia, complicating their diplomatic relations.

As investigations continue, the findings could have significant implications for both countries and their ongoing geopolitical dynamics.
