OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stepped down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party.

“I will resign after the party chooses its new leader,” Trudeau, 53, said on Monday.

He will continue in a caretaker role until a successor is chosen. The leadership transition has begun.

Parliament to Be Suspended

Trudeau stated that Canadian parliament would be suspended until March 24 for the selection of a new leader.

The Canadian parliament has been deadlocked for months after the longest minority session in history.

He mentioned that he informed the Governor General about the need for a new session.

The Governor General granted the request, and the House will now be prorogued until March 24.

Trudeau Reflects on Regret Over Canada’s Election System

Justin Trudeau expressed regret over Canada’s election process as he announces plans to step down.

“My one regret, especially as we approach this election, is our election system,” Trudeau shared.

He wished Canada had a system allowing voters to select a second or third choice on their ballots.

Trudeau believes this reform would give voters more choices, improving the fairness of the political system.

Who is Trudeau?

Justin Trudeau, son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, seems set to leave political legacy.

In 2008, Trudeau entered politics, securing a seat in Parliament before becoming the leader of the Liberal Party.

In 2015, he became Prime Minister after a successful anti-Conservative campaign, defeating Stephen Harper in elections.

Trudeau, one of Canada’s youngest leaders, gained popularity globally, positioning himself as a progressive alternative to President Donald Trump.

He secured victories in 2019 and 2021 but faced controversies, including past blackface incidents and criticism over vaccine mandates.

Public support for Trudeau dropped, especially following tariff threats from then-President Trump and the unexpected resignation of his Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland.
