GAZA:  The truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is now in effect, confirmed by a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office. The ceasefire, agreed upon as part of negotiations for hostage releases, began at 11:15 a.m. local time (4:15 a.m. ET).

Start Delayed by Technical Issues

Initially scheduled to commence earlier at 8:30 a.m. local time (1:30 a.m. ET), the ceasefire faced a nearly three-hour delay. Hamas attributed the postponement to a “technical” issue involving the transmission of names of three hostages due for release to Israel on Sunday.

Tensions Flare Before Truce

The delay saw renewed violence as Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza, resulting in casualties. Medical and civil defense officials in Gaza reported that these strikes killed at least 13 Palestinians and injured 30 others. The escalation underscored the fragility of the situation before the truce could be implemented.

Background on the Conflict

The conflict between Israel and Hamas, based in Gaza, has caused significant devastation and loss of life over recent weeks. The ongoing hostilities follow a sudden attack by Hamas on Israeli territory in early October, which led to significant casualties and the abduction of hostages. In response, Israel launched an extensive military operation targeting Hamas positions in Gaza. The ensuing weeks have brought immense destruction to the densely populated Gaza Strip, with civilian casualties mounting on both sides.

Framework for Ceasefire and Hostage Release
The current ceasefire is part of a broader agreement mediated by international parties. As per the framework, hostages held by Hamas will be released in stages. In exchange, the ceasefire will remain in place temporarily to facilitate these releases. The agreement aims to provide a brief period of calm and humanitarian relief in Gaza, enabling aid deliveries to a population in desperate need of resources.

Caution Remains
Although the ceasefire is active, its stability remains uncertain. Both sides have accused the other of violating previous truces, leaving observers wary of how long the agreement will hold. The delay and subsequent violence today have already demonstrated how fragile the situation remains, even with international involvement.
