NEW JERSEY:  Dick Button, the two-time Olympic gold medalist who revolutionized figure skating, has passed away at age 95. His death on Thursday followed a tragic plane crash that killed skaters representing the sport’s past, present, and future. The incident brought back painful memories of the 1961 plane crash that claimed the lives of the US world figure skating team, including many of Button’s peers.

A Daredevil Athlete

Born Richard Totten Button on July 18, 1929, Button defied gravity and expectations throughout his career. At age 12, he was told he would never be a successful skater. Undeterred, Button intensified his training and by age 16, he became the US champion. This early success was just the start of his extraordinary journey.

Historic Olympic Achievements

In the 1948 Winter Olympics, Button became the first skater to land a double Axel jump in competition. At just 18, he won the gold medal, making history as the first US Olympic figure skating champion. His record as the youngest man to win Olympic gold in figure skating still stands today, more than 70 years later.

Innovative Moves and Impact on the Sport

Button was known for his boldness and innovative approach to skating. He introduced the “flying camel” spin, which became a signature move in figure skating. This complex maneuver involves a skater launching into the air during a spin, continuing backward with both the torso and free leg parallel to the ice. The move is now commonly referred to as the “Button camel.”

Balancing Skating and Education

After his first Olympic gold, Button attended Harvard University but still managed to dominate the figure skating world. He won the world championships every year during his time at Harvard. In the 1952 Olympics, Button made history again by landing the first triple loop jump in Olympic competition. This feat helped him secure another gold medal.
