WASHINGTON: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has suggested that Canada officially become the 51st state of the United States. His comments followed the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who stepped down from his role as leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister but will continue as an interim leader until a new party head is selected.

In a statement shared on social media platform Trump stated that Canadians would welcome the opportunity to join the U.S. as a new state. According to Trump, such a merger would offer significant economic and security benefits for both nations.

“Canada is facing substantial trade losses, and Trudeau realized this before resigning. Joining the U.S. would be a win-win,” Trump wrote. He further claimed that becoming part of the United States would allow Canadians to pay lower taxes and avoid economic setbacks.

Trump also outlined the security advantages of unification, stating that a joint Canada-U.S. entity would strengthen defenses against potential threats, particularly from Russian and Chinese naval forces. He described this hypothetical merger as a path to building “a truly great nation.”

Resignation and Economic Concerns

Trudeau’s resignation comes amid growing political and economic pressures in Canada. While his decision shocked many, his critics claim it reflects Canada’s mounting challenges. Trump linked these challenges to trade deficits that, according to him, the U.S. could help resolve through closer integration.

Liberal Party members are now preparing to elect a new leader, but Trudeau’s interim leadership ensures governmental stability during this transition. Meanwhile, Trump’s remarks have added a geopolitical twist to Canada’s internal leadership change.

A Controversial Suggestion

While Trump’s proposal has sparked discussion, it remains unclear how Canadians feel about the idea of unification with the U.S. The suggestion also raises questions about sovereignty, economic autonomy, and the cultural distinctiveness of Canada as an independent nation.

Trump, however, remains firm in his belief that a merger would benefit citizens on both sides of the border, calling it a solution for Canada’s economic struggles and a strategy for enhanced mutual defense.
