ABUJA: A petrol tanker accident caused a massive explosion, killing at least 70 and injuring dozens in Niger state, Nigeria.
Tanker Overturns, Sparks Deadly Explosion
The incident occurred Saturday when a petrol tanker overturned in Niger state, spilling fuel that ignited and exploded.
According to the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), “Over 70 bodies have been recovered, 56 injured, and more than 15 shops destroyed.”
Injuries and Property Damage Reported
NEMA stated injured victims were transported to hospitals, while recovery efforts for deceased individuals are still ongoing.
Local Residents Caught in Tragedy
Kumar Tsukwam, the Federal Road Safety Corps sector commander for Niger state, revealed most victims were locals attempting to collect spilled petrol.
“A large crowd gathered to scoop fuel despite efforts to warn them,” Tsukwam said.
Firefighters Extinguish Flames
Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze, but the damage was already devastating.
Recurring Tragedies in Nigeria
This incident mirrors a similar explosion last October in Jigawa state, where 147 people lost their lives. Fuel tanker explosions are frequent in Nigeria, where fuel spills often attract impoverished residents seeking free petrol.
Economic Hardships Worsen Risks
Rising fuel prices in Nigeria have contributed to the desperation behind such accidents. Petrol prices have soared over 400% since President Bola Tinubu removed fuel subsidies in May 2023, exacerbating economic struggles for citizens.
Government Response Needed
This latest tragedy highlights the urgent need for stricter road safety measures and public awareness to prevent future disasters.
