Tel Aviv: Israel announced the resolution of issues regarding the hostage deal with Hamas in Gaza on Sunday night. Hamas will release six hostages this week under a revised agreement. Civilian Arbel Yehoud and soldier Agam Berger are among those set for release.
According to the deal, Yehoud, Berger, and one other unnamed hostage will be freed Thursday. Three additional hostages will follow on Saturday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the deal after Hamas submitted hostages’ condition details as required.
Hostage Deal Implementation Challenges
Hamas delayed providing information on the hostages, sparking tensions. The terror group violated the truce deal by releasing IDF servicewomen before civilians. After Hamas assured that Yehoud is alive and would soon be released, officials achieved a breakthrough by clarifying her civilian status.
Prisoner Exchange Details
In return, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners—30 for each civilian and 50 for Berger, including life-term inmates. Jerusalem emphasized that violations of the agreement would not be tolerated. Qatar mediated negotiations, supported by the United States.
Gaza’s North Reopens Amid Developments
The agreement also enables displaced Gazans to return to the Strip’s northern areas. Starting Monday, Israel will allow movement through the Netzarim Corridor. Hamas had reportedly agreed to prioritize civilians’ release as stipulated in the deal.
Uncertainty Around Captives’ List
Israel received information from Hamas regarding the hostages’ status in the deal’s first stage. Though details were limited, intelligence confirmed the overall figures aligned without significant discrepancies.
The developments mark progress in the 42-day truce’s initial phase, which began January 19. Officials continue monitoring the agreement’s adherence to ensure smooth implementation.
