TELAVIV:  On Thursday, buses carrying 110 Palestinian prisoners arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

This phased agreement aims to end over 15 months of conflict in the coastal territory. After a prolonged delay, it halted the ongoing war that escalated tensions between Israel and Palestinian factions.

Celebrations in Ramallah as Prisoners Return

As the buses arrived in Ramallah, women wearing traditional Palestinian dresses ululated in celebration. The freed prisoners were welcomed with chants from men who shouted, “We sacrifice our souls and blood for you.” This release, which was a highly anticipated moment for many, marks a significant step in the peace process.

Hamas says 110 Palestinian prisoners freed after chaotic hostage release | BBC News

Hamas says 110 Palestinian prisoners have been freed as part of the ceasefire deal brokered between Israel and Gaza earlier this month. The release of Palestinian prisoners to Ramallah in the occupied West Bank was delayed after the chaotic third release of hostages in Khan Younis was criticised by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Zakaria Zubaidi Among the Released Prisoners

One of the most notable prisoners freed was Zakaria Zubaidi, a prominent leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Zubaidi, a member of the Fatah group, had previously escaped from prison in 2021 along with three other inmates before being recaptured. Known as the strongman of Jenin, Zubaidi has been a key figure in Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation.

Israel prison break celebrated by Palestinians

At least six Palestinian prisoners have escaped from a high-security prison in Israel. They appeared to have used a tunnel under the Gilboa prison - just north of the occupied West Bank. Such breakouts are extremely rare. One of those who managed to escape is Zakaria Zubeidi, a high-profile figure in Fatah"s armed wing.

Jenin’s Role in Palestinian Resistance

Jenin, a city in the West Bank, has long been a hotbed of resistance to Israeli occupation. It has been the site of frequent Israeli military raids, including one major operation just a week ago. Zubaidi’s release highlights the ongoing tensions in the region, where Palestinian groups continue to oppose Israeli control.

A Step Forward or a Temporary Calm?

The release of these prisoners comes amid efforts to de-escalate the situation. However, questions remain about the long-term impact of such agreements on the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The situation remains fragile, with many wondering whether this will lead to sustained peace or only a brief lull in hostilities.

The Bigger Picture of Israeli-Palestinian Tensions

While the release of prisoners provides a glimmer of hope for peace, the larger issues of territorial disputes and military operations remain unresolved. As Israeli forces continue their operations, the people of the West Bank remain caught in a cycle of violence, unsure of what the future holds.
