Rome: Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been released from an Iranian prison and is on her way back to Italy. Sala, who reports for Il Foglio, was detained in mid-December while on assignment in Tehran. The journalist was held in Evin prison, known for its harsh conditions, during her detention. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office confirmed her release on Wednesday.

Diplomatic Efforts Lead to Freedom

“The plane carrying Cecilia Sala has just departed Tehran,” stated a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s office. The release was secured through intense diplomatic and intelligence efforts, as emphasized in an official statement. Italian President Sergio Mattarella personally informed Sala’s parents of her release earlier that day.

Journalist’s Mission and Initial Silence

Sala had traveled to Iran with a journalistic visa, producing episodes for Chora Media’s Stories podcast before her arrest. Her detention was initially kept quiet at the request of her family and authorities to facilitate negotiations. Chora Media later revealed her trip had complied with all journalistic protections and protocols.

Iran’s Track Record on Press Freedom

Iranian authorities accused Sala of violating national laws, though formal charges remain unclear, according to Italian officials. Iran ranks among the world’s most repressive regimes for journalists, with only four nations performing worse, per Reporters Without Borders. The country’s crackdown has intensified since nationwide protests in 2022.
