Los Angeles: LAPD are cracking down on looters in areas under mandatory evacuation orders, officials confirmed Saturday.
Capt. Mike Lorenz of LAPD announced that seven arrests were made within just two days.
“Looting remains an ongoing issue,” Lorenz said during a community meeting in Pacific Palisades Saturday evening.
Police are increasing patrols to secure the affected zones more effectively and prevent further incidents.
Fake Firefighters Among Arrested Looters
Two looters were arrested while posing as firefighters, attempting to move between homes within evacuation areas.
“We caught individuals pretending to be firefighters to loot houses,” Lorenz reported, stressing heightened enforcement efforts.
Additional resources are being deployed to protect homes left vulnerable during the mandatory evacuation orders.
Private security guards hired by residents are now subject to strict vetting and monitoring by the LAPD.
Curfew Enforced to Prevent Crime
A curfew is in effect across all mandatory evacuation zones to deter looters and protect residents’ properties.
Curfew violations carry misdemeanor charges, fines up to $1,000, or possible jail sentences under LA County law.
Authorities warn residents and contractors that entering restricted zones without clearance risks immediate arrest.
The curfew remains a vital tool in maintaining order and discouraging criminal activity in affected neighborhoods.
Community Vigilance Against Looting
Some displaced residents have hired private security to safeguard homes, even those heavily damaged by fire.
“We’re working to ensure that guards comply with laws while helping to protect properties,” Lorenz added.
Police efforts have focused on deterring criminal activities while ensuring community safety during recovery efforts.
LAPD encourages residents to report suspicious activities, emphasizing collaboration between law enforcement and the public.
Continuous Efforts to Protect Evacuation Zones
Authorities have reassured the public that securing evacuation zones remains a top priority during this critical time.
“With each day, we are securing the area more thoroughly to prevent these incidents,” Lorenz stated confidently.
The LAPD vows to remain vigilant to prevent exploitation of the evacuation crisis for criminal gain.
Officials continue to stress the importance of compliance with evacuation orders and curfews for public safety.
