Los Angeles: Malibu has lost a third of its eastern edge due to the destructive Palisades Fire. Mayor Doug Stewart described the devastation during a community meeting on Friday night.
“This marks our third fire in three months—Franklin, Broad, and now Palisades,” Stewart stated. He emphasized this fire’s unprecedented destruction and its heavy toll on the city.
Iconic Highway and Homes Destroyed
“The eastern edge of Malibu is unrecognizable,” Stewart said. “Beloved homes from Topanga to near Duke’s Malibu are completely gone.”
The Pacific Coast Highway, lined with once-beautiful residences, now bears scars of fire damage. These homes had long defined the city’s charm.
Big Rock Community Reduced to Ashes
Big Rock, a close-knit community within Malibu, suffered catastrophic losses, the mayor reported. The fire consumed homes and displaced countless residents.
“This fire didn’t just destroy property; it dismantled lives and uprooted families,” he added somberly. Recovery is expected to be lengthy.
Firefight Continues Amid Strong Winds
Despite the fire’s current scale, Stewart warned the danger isn’t over. High winds continue to fuel active flames.
“We’re still battling the fire front,” he stressed. Residents should stay vigilant as conditions remain risky.
A Long Path to Recovery
Rebuilding efforts will be immense, Stewart acknowledged, but Malibu’s resilience remains unwavering. “We’ll work together to restore our city,” he affirmed.
The emotional and physical toll of these fires has tested Malibu deeply. Yet, its spirit endures through tragedy and challenges.
